Langer Weg der Gastarbajt/Long journey of guestworkers is a project initiated and produced by several Vienna based organisations, associations and individuals connected through the Platform for Temporary Creation, BLOCKFREI being one of them. The project itself is dedicated to the phenomena of working migration (Gastarbeit), marking the 50th anniversary of signing the contract regulating the administrative conditions of guest working force originating from Yugoslavia and coming to work in Austria.

CURATORS' AGENDA: VIENNA 2016

After successfully carrying out projects Curators' Agenda (2015) and Curator's Connection (2013), BLOCKFREI is announcing a new open call for the Curators' Agenda: VIENNA 2016, a six-week curators-in-residence program.

Envisioned as an intensive residency for emerging curators from all around the globe, the program is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of the contemporary Viennese art scene, as well as to establish a network among its partakers.

ŠUŠUR!
FESTIVAL OF WORDS 2016

Šušur! Festival had devoted this year's program to the socio-political aspect of intellectual migration and associated cause-effects. The goal was to examine the emergence of nomadism in the context of art, primarily literature, and try to find an answer to a question whether the origin of this phenomenon lies in a search for inspiration and adventure, or it is a consequence of the necessity and actuality.

The exhibition brings together artists whose works explore landscape as an expanded idea. As dynamic processes that are shaped over time or as personal experiences, sites record traces that later on are evoked and imprinted in our mind. The assertion "I MOVED ON until I WENT BACK" conveys a personal experience in which the remembrance of an event generates movement – an inner transformation that may alter the memory of the event itself.

The way how the fleeing people perceive their new country, environment as well as perhaps their current home is the focus of the photography exhibition VIENNA/SERBIA RAW – UNSERE NEUEN NACHBARN (Vienna/Serbia Raw - our new neighbours). After taking place in Belgrade in October, it will now also be shown in a public space in Vienna.

The exhibition VIENNA/SERBIA RAW - OUR NEW NEIGHBOURS is a result of photography workshops with migrants, which took place between May and July 2015 in two cities in Serbia (Subotica and Belgrade) and Vienna. The workshops were based on artistic practice of the established photo collective BELGRADE RAW from Serbia in cooperation with BLOCKFREI.

After a successful tour across the Balkans and Europe, the Vienna-based organisation BLOCKFREI and Künstlerhaus bring the INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT OF CHEAP LASER GRAPHICS to Vienna. During two nights from 14. until 15. November we will join forces to transform the Künstlerhaus building in a pop-up gallery that offered accessible artwork for all.

BLOCKFREI proudly announces its appearance at the 10th VIENNAFAIR, which will be realized from 2. – 5. of October 2014, at Messe Wien (Vienna) and on which occasion BLOCKFREI will be presenting the project INDEPENDENT ART FROM SERBIA. BLOCKFREI will act as an umbrella association and exhibit art pieces by five artists closely connected with the independent initiatives active in the Serbian contemporary art scene during the past decade.

ŠUŠUR! Festival od riči 2014

BLOCKFREI is co-producing another edition of the literary festival Šušur! Festival od riči in a partnership with Croatian association Kulturna Akcija - KULA and the poetic collective Pesničenje from Belgrade, Serbia.
This is the third year that ŠUŠUR will be realized in the heart of Korčula island in Dalmatia, where poets from the local and regional scene will be presented in two rounds.

7 curators exploring Vienna and Budapest for 8 weeks throughout the CURATORS CONNECTION platform -30 programs in 3 weeks, structured by 3 coordinators - Vienna's art scene exposed and befriended.
CURATORS CONNECTION is a project conceived by Budapest based organization cARTc and Vienna based BLOCKFREI organisation, envisaged as five weeks residency programme open for emerging curators coming from all over the world. The program lasting from 9. of October till 31. of November 2013 was successfully completed with joint contentment for all parties included.

In the last glimpse of the year 2013, on the 30. of December, BLOCKFREI has co-produced winter edition of ŠUŠUR! FESTIVAL OF WORDS in Belgrade. Up untill now, ŠUŠUR! has been winning over summer crowds of the Croatian island of Korčula.

This summer event dedicated to literature and art was presented as a part of regular gastronomic and cultural program of the Cultural center GRAD under the name Deli Monday.

CURATORS CONNECTION

CURATORS CONNECTION is an intensive 8 weeks programme that looks directly at the roles and responsibilities of curators as mediators between artists, objects, institutions, experiences and audiences. The main focus is on contemporary conditions of display and the understanding of issues and institutions affecting contemporary art. CURATORS CONNECTION aims to foster interesting dialogues on issues surrounding curation and takes a wide perspective in the inquiry into what constitutes "the curatorial" in the Central European region and particularly in Vienna and Budapest today.

The Program is organised by cARTc space and project of contemporary art (Budapest) and Blockfrei (Vienna).
